Cricova Cabernet 1993 Cellar Collection WineRRP: £14.05
Cricova Cabernet 1990 Cellar Collection Wine is produced from the finest grapes of the classical european Cabernet-Sauvignon grapes, cultivated on the sunny, soil-rich slopes of the Moldavian hills.
Only the best harvest years make it into the famous Cricova cellars following the stringent assesment of the Cricova oenologists. Innitially matured in the french oak casks, the Cricova Cabernet 1990 Cellar Collection Wine was then cork-bottled and wax sealed, to be cellared in the underground city of Cricova, situated at a depth of 80m, galleries which are characterised by a unique microclimate: vibration free, an all-year-around temperature of 12º-14ºC and humidity of 85-95%. This 1990 wine is a reserve collection and there have been made just a limited quantity of this elegantly matured wine from the outstanding grapes of the 100% 1990 Cabernet Sauvignon.
Immediatelly after decanting: Quite a pale wine, fading rim and light red core. A spicy, musty, fruit melange with good density. The palate is quite deliciously refreshing, dry and sapid with a dusty savoury finish. It is a well structured wine with a light fruitiness; it feels tender and gentle with a fragile character and redcurrant freshness. The finish is of some length and textured.
3 hours later: The time open has filled out the wine giving it more depth and a more attractive fruit.
24 hours later: Dense nose with light spice and gentle rosehip fruit, sapid juicy character, really fresh.

| Critics Opinion | At almost two decades old, this Cabernet smells like old claret, with a dusty earthiness, traces of woodsmoke and cedar from French oak and just a glimpse of quite elegant and ripe black fruit. On the palate this has wonderful life about it: it is medium-bodied and quite fresh and breezy in style, the taut black fruit is linear and lean, but it doesn't taste tired or thin. It's a fresh style of wine, unencumbered with too much oak and allowing the naturally fine tannins and acidity to give support into a clean, fruity and spicy finish. Really enjoyable old wine this, and should have a good few years cellaring potential. 90/100, Tom Cannavan |
I will put this straight. 19 years old wine for under 25 quid is not something I had any expectations at all. And this is where I was so wrong...
I am not claiming to have had many 19 years old petrus pomerol's in my life, so I cant tell the difference, but I can tell that this is probably the most pleasant 19 years old drink I had in ages. Fruity-aromatic, yet light and fresh with a perfectly balanced acidity and red-berries-cherry tannins. Perfect!
Upon opening our newest wine - Smernie, we were straight away attracted to a faint perfumed nose, that after a few moments and swirling around in our glass became more pronounced and even more Moorish.
The intense bouquet, filled the room and our heads, but was not to overpowering.......a...
